The MAGA celebration of Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week, had one high moment. His widow, Erica, displaying great grace, asked forgiveness for the man accused of shooting him. Much of the rest of the ceremony was marked by venom and lies. No surprise Stephen Miller, a quintessential lowlife, lived up to that. Tulsi Gabbard spoke of freedom of speech as the foundation of this country.
She's in an administration that orders law firms who they can hire, tells private universities who to admit and what they can teach. When with the help of a hit man at the FCC goes after late night comedians, shakes down television networks. And it also brings ridiculous suits against the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. This is the most anti First Amendment administration in my lifetime.
The service, with a heavy religious and evangelical tone, celebrated President Trump, who openly spewed hate. Now, I haven't read scripture in a while, but I don't recall Jesus saying, blessed are the haters. The overarching lie was that the violence in this country is caused by the left wing. That is a lie, as former FBI Director Ray testified a few years ago. It comes mainly from white-wing hate groups, neo-Nazis, white nationalists, anti-Semites, the Proud Boys. The Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, reports that over the past 50 years, 65 people have been murdered in politically motivated acts by left-wingers. In the same period, 391 have been murdered by right-wingers, or six times more.
Phoenix was laying the groundwork for Trump MAGA plans. More people need to, of all political persuasions, need to call out these lies.
The Cato Institute numbers excluded the 3,000 deaths of 9/11, celebrated by—among others—Barack Obama’s pastor, and Ward Churchill the (former) Chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado. (Churchill also—falsely—claimed to be a Native American, which stood him in good stead under affirmative action.).
