The Worst of the Worst: Stephen Miller
Carville-Hunt survey of most dangerous Trump appointees
The overwhelming vote for the most dangerous Trump appointee: Stephen Miller, the immigration hating top White House aide.
In a survey of their podcast listeners and others, crafted by James Carville and Albert Hunt, with over 1,000 responses, 37% said Miller was the worst Trump appointee. He got more votes than the next three highest combined.
The podcast followers, reflecting the hosts, leading Democratic strategist James Carville and journalist Albert Hunt, probably are predominately mainstream progressives.
Koz, from Hunley, Ill. a Miller voter castigates him as a "diabolical individual."
The 39 year old Miller who despises his critics, may see this as a badge of honor.
A man who spews hate, there is no more influential figure in Trumpland. He is a master of navigating the bureaucracy has easy access to and the complete confidence of the President. He weighs in on a variety of issues,on occasion a major voice in Justice Department decisions.
But he is the driving force behind the anti-immigration moves starting in the first term with the Muslim ban and a policy separating migrant children from their parents, His reach has expanded this time, leading the effort to arrest and deport 3,000 undocumented immigrants daily.
The initial commitment to focus only on those who have committed crimes is long gone. Miller is now ordering raids on Home Depot parking lots and malls in Hispanic neighborhoods.
The deportation czar Tom Homan and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem basically take orders from Miller.
Former associates say Miller is a white nationalist with a long history of bigotry against people of color. His own uncle labeled him a "immigration hypocrite" noting at the turn of the last century his Jewish ancestors, emigrated to America to escape antisemitism in Belarus. Miller's anti-immigration policies, his uncle wrote, "repudiate the very foundation of our family's life in this country."
The biography of Miller is entitled: "Hatemonger: Stephen Miller, Donald Trump and the White Nationalist agenda." The podcast respondents were vehement in their denunciation of Miller, whose official title, deputy White House chief of staff, understates his clout.
"Miller is pure evil," writes Becky from Louisville, Ky. "He's a white supremacist, Nazi."
The real worst of the worst is someone you (and I) haven't heard of. The real worst of the worst is the Trump apparatchik, sitting in a cubicle, turning the rants of Trump, Miller, Vought, etc. into actual policy and action. The implementers. The low level appointees who just have to say "no" in order to render the Administration impotent. Every strongman needs a legion of bureaucrats, functionaries, "back office" workers, and other minions toiling for him in order to rule. Trump is no different. And that is why the unfamiliar Trump apparatchik is the worst of the worst - because he is just as responsible, yet more necessary than any of the big names.
Miller is still Jewish and the white supremacists he supports will always see him that way no matter how hard he tries to curry their favor.
