House Speaker Mike Johnson, with Donald Trump as his enforcer, gets credit, deservedly, for delivering almost all Republicans in passing the huge and controversial tax and budget bill.
Although both right wingers and moderate conservatives raised objections, laying down red lines, in the weeks leading to the vote, the Republican leaders pressured and cajoled almost all of them to go along for the sake of Trump's Republican party. The measure passed 215 to 214 with only two GOP votes in opposition.
Lost is the arguably more impressive performance by House Democrats. With leader Hakeem Jeffries they were totally united in opposing the legislation.
Moreover, they thwarted GOP efforts to rush the measure with minimal deliberation and attention.
The leadership-responsive Democrats on the Rules Committee, forced delays so the panel, which had to clear the bill for floor action, started meeting at 1 am. Several Republicans who had heralded the bills' work requirements for Medicaid recipients, fell asleep during the many hours of deliberations.
For several days last week Democrats repeatedly scored points against the "Big Beautiful bill" that would result in over eight million Americans losing health care coverage, enact tax cuts heavily skewed to the rich, and increase the deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade.
Throughout Democrats used social media to make their case.
The House floor debate was intense with Jeffries charging the Republican bill, as it stands, would cost of GOP its tenuous majority in the House next year.
Polling on the bill, before it actually passed, showed a solid plurality in opposition with independents running 3-to-2 against. After last week Democrats believe those opposition numbers will increase.
There have been complaints, especially from the party's left wing, that Jeffries has been insufficiently aggressive in attacking Trump and the Republicans.
However he was super aggressive on this measure which may resonate more with voters than other items.
Come on…all democrats speak from the same script…they cannot think for themselves. Frightening.
Too soon for the Democrats to do a victory lap!
