Late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel was suspended by ABC for comments surrounding the Charlie Kirk murder. Actually the only thing Kimmel specifically said about Kirk was that on behalf of the Kimmel family he sent his love to the Kirks. He didn't mention any of the controversy remarks Kirk had made ⁓ earlier. He did suggest that MAGA was playing politics with this tragedy. They are.
but he wrongly speculated the killer might be a MAGA guy. He mocked President Trump for when asked about the slaying, Trump quickly turned to building his new ballroom in the White House. This is mild stuff, but we know ABC Disney already, indefensibly, paid off Trump over a journalistic issue. It's all about their corporate interests. Nextstar, major owner of TV stations, said, we won't run Kimmel.
I used to write for an outlet owned by Nextar and I thought it had journalistic integrity no more. But the real villain here is FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, who could affect ABC and Nextar's business. Let's be clear, the FCC under Carr is not an independent agency. He's Trump's lapdog. Trump hates Kimmel, ipso Carr threatened ABC
that it could handle Kimmel the easy way, get rid of him, or the hard way, suggesting he would do it. Carr is a partisan thug. And let's dismiss any more talk from Trump-loving conservatives about the virtues of free speech. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Trump and his lackeys like Carr have contempt for the First Amendment.
We love Jimmy and his monologue. He is talented and caring. He should have been given the opportunity to address this himself and to cut him off at the knees is just wrong. I would think ABC would stand up for its audience and producers. What happens to the band, all the other workers dependent on the show to support their families?
