GUESS WHO REALLY IS COMMITTING "LAWFARE ?"
WEAPONIZING THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
-
Kellyanne Conway's "alternative facts," the Trump 1.0 adviser's euphemism for lying, form the underpinning of Trump 2.0's Justice Department.
Under the canard that the Merrick Garland-led Justice Department engaged in "partisan lawfare," the Trump Justice Department, led by a trio of Trump apparatchiks, are the real weaponizers. Actually, Garland was, if anything, too cautious, but the federal cases brought against Trump were valid. There may have been one or two politically inadvisable actions by state and local prosecutors, but they weren't without legal merit.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, a longtime Trump loyalist, and her two deputies, Trump's criminal defense lawyers, are looking for retribution. All the insurrectionists in the Trump-inspired violent January 6 assault on the U,S. Capitol trying to overturn a legitimate election, have been pardoned. At the same time, the Justice Department is trying to axe law enforcement officials who were engaged in the cases against the 45th President.
Going after anyone perceived as a political opponent and a anything goes for loyalists is a dual system of justice found in authoritarian regimes. It's worth reminding that the Garland Justice Department indicted and convicted a senior Democratic senator, Robert Menendez and the President's son, Hunter, and handed down a powerful indictment against the Democratic Mayor of America's largest city.
Can anyone imagine comparable actions by this Justice Department?
To be sure, Biden abused the pardon privilege in the final month of his Presidency. Trump has more than picked up that baton in only weeks.
In addition to the January 6th insurrectionists, he has pardoned a former Republican congressman and is in the process of giving a pass to the indicted Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles after he sponsored an amendment allowing Trump to run for a third term. (Flattery will get you everywhere with this President.)
